What moves me about this piece is how all the tropes and assumptions concerning West Coast liberal elites - figuratively, literally - are melted away. We have become so numb (and resentful) toward such figures that by now 'elite' has morphed into its own unchallenged archetype. This piece appears to take that head on - reminds us, as the fires did, that ultimately the playing field is much closer to being equal than we tend to acknowledge, a fact which feels inherently disorienting, dangerous even. Anyway, just one of the things I took from this.
I don't think I actually like it, but it is very good writing, and one rarely gets to use "Rabelaisian" correctly, so that's cool. My personal tastes aside, BRAVO for TMR for publishing this. Keep it up!
Hell yeah let’s goooo
Wow! I'm hooked and pre-ordered.
I could’ve guessed the writer after the first paragraph
