Best review on film yet. A bold opinion, clearly expressed, and substantiated in a way that I understood and delighted in the writer's taste. Reminded me of the old film reviews in The New Yorker, which I'd read to the end even if I never planned to see the film.

EXACTLY my thoughts!!! Such a refreshing change of tone and intellect that gives me hope for the future of culture writing.

I am looking forward to watching it. I like distanced love affairs AND snipers. Thanks Petra for giving us a sense of the movie in your excellent review.

And of course people will always disagree about movies and all art.

This is a terrible, boring, and also ugly movie with an absurd plot. The ending was predictable and the worst part about that is that it did not occur soon enough.

I totally agree with Reed's assessment above! The movie sucked.

The best film about the film was the 'courting at long distance' scenario. The two leads somehow manage to have chemistry despite the fact that there is an expanse between them. Unfortunately, the Gorge stops being a film (or changes mediums) when it enters the gorge and turns into a poorly designed video game . I admire your unabashed enthusiasm for the film though.

yeah, it was doing something quite interesting and unexpected for the first act or two with the offbeat romance and relaxed pace, then reverted to type and became another inane action movie

You make me want to see it - without giving much away. Terrific review! John Julius, below (who knew there was another one!) is right when he says it reminds him of the old NYer reviews: bold and solid. Yay Petra!
